Power Supply Cut Causes High Drama in Sec 17 of Chandigarh

  • As power supply of around 250 commercial consumers of Sector 17-C was disconnected due to " non-payment of bills" on Wednesday, it led to a high drama in the market, with shopkeepers showing the receipts of bill payment to the electricity department officials.Shopkeepers said as they had not received the bills on time, they paid these with 10% penalty and still their supply was disconnected. The electricity department had outsourced the bill distribution work to post offices about two to three months ago.
  • JPS Kalra, spokesperson of trader association, Chandigarh, said, "In our sector, one building has more than 20 or 30 connections. And many of them have these connections in their names rather than in their owner's. But the postmaster leaves the bills at one place because of which we don't come to know about these. On receiving disconnection notices, all, except a few, paid their bills with 10% penalty. But still the supply was disconnected. When we showed the receipts, the department officials accepted their mistake." UT power department superintending engineer M P Singh said, "We don't have a computerized system to keep a track of those who foot the bills. Those who don't pay it till the due date are put on defaulters' list. One can show the payment receipt and avoid disconnection." tnn
