Locals Protest Erratic Power Supply During Muharram

  • As Muharram is being observed in the Kashmir valley, residents of a predominantly Shai locality in the uptown here Saturday held protest against the erratic power suppl.Hundreds of residents of Khomeini Chowk, Bemina, held a protest demonstration against the erratic power supply and blamed the officials of PDD Division 3rd for failing to make arrangements for ongoing Muharram in the area.The protesters said government had claimed to provide uninterrupted power supply in Shia dominated areas, “but we have been facing frequent power cuts, much to the dismay”.“Government is only making tall claims, but the ground reality is different,” the protesters said.
  • Castigating the PDD Division 3rd officials, they said that the division has failed to make arrangements to ensure smooth and hassle free Muharram.“Power lines in many places are in disarray. They are hanging precariously overhead. Without poles, wires are draped across houses and trees in many places,” said Mohammad Yousuf Bhat of Khomeini Chowk Bemina.He said seven days of Muharram have passed, but not a single team of PDD officials has paid a visit to the area for on spot inspection.Mohammad Asgar of Wanipora, Bemina, said, “There have been many incidents where people have had fatal run-in with the heavy cables, but the concerned authorities seem least bothered about it.”
  • “Bemina has been given 100 bulbs of 80W each by PDD Division III in the name of Muharram funds,” Asgar added.He also blamed Srinagar Municipal Corporation for its non-seriousness over the increasing number of canines and piles of garbage in the area.“The population of canines is increasing in Bemina. Although the area falls under the jurisdiction of SMC, but truckloads of dogs are unloaded in our area,” he complained.He said SMC has been doing “little” as far as sanitation is concerned.
