Discoms Claim They Are Ready for Winter

  • Expect load to increase by a few per cent more when temperature falls furtherPower distribution companies in the Capital claim they are ready to meet the winter load. Having tied up with Central as well as State generators for supply of power, the discoms assert they are assured of supply to meet the demand when the mercury falls and biting cold sets in.Officials of the BSES and the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited said “long term” power purchase agreements will hold them in good stead. “We have made several tie ups with Central as well as State generation companies who have assured us of supply to meet the demand in winters,” said a BSES official.Discoms are happy that they were spared from having to purchase short term power through the year, because of these long term PPAs and banking of power.
  • “This year we were fortunate to have these long term plans, and for the times that there was a small shortage, we were able to meet that gap as well through banking. We did not have to shell out more for short term buying and that was a blessing,” said a discom official.Though there has been a cumulative increase of about four per cent in the power demand for the corresponding time last year, the discoms said they expect the load to increase by a few per cent more when the temperature decreases further.“As of now the cold has not set in, and the demand is manageable. But if when the winter peak is reached and the weather changes, we will be prepared to meet the load through our tie-ups. Problems will only arise, if there is a fault at a plant or a technical glitch,” said another official.
  • They are also confident about being able to stick to the grid code. Recently, the Northern Region Load Dispatch Centre had asked the discoms to ensure there was no violation of the grid and no overdrawal of power that could lead to a grid collapse.“Delhi has been really disciplined for the past several years now. Barring a few aberrations, the discoms have not been overdrawing beyond their due and have adhered to the grid code,” said the discom official.
