PMANE Backs Jaya's Plea for More Power Supply

  • Chennai, Dec 8 (PTI) Rallying behind Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, protestors against Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant today said they fully supported her request for more power supply to the state and appealed to the Prime Minister to fulfill it. "We express our sincere gratitude, solidarity and support to Chief Minister in her efforts to get more power for the state. PMANE appeals the Prime Minister to fulfill the Chief Ministers requests immediately," Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) Coordinator S P Udayakumar said in a statement here. Referring to Chief Minister's December 7 letter to Prime Minister, he said Tamil Nadu was facing a shortage of around 11,500 MW power and the financial crisis faced by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) was "quite alarming." He also said that the Centre had been turning a 'deaf ear' to requests from the state for finaincial help. "Instead of begging and pleading with the unresponsive Central government, the Chief Minister should take the Tamil people into confidence, concentrate on renewable sources of energy, adopt decentralised and demand-based generation schemes, and devise creative energy projects for Tamil Nadu," he suggested.
