Foggy Weather Affects Power Grid in Haryana

  • There was partial grid failure at Panipat thermal plant due to foggy conditions as four units of the power plant tripped late Friday night.According to official sources, the four units of the thermal plant tripped at 12.15 am leading to loss of 920MW power, which resulted in complete blackout in parts of the state. The state had to resort to heavy overdrawl of power from northern grid to meet shortages. It may be mentioned that earlier unit 6 and 8 at the plant had first tripped around 10.30 PM on Friday due to ID fan problem and jerk in the system. However, when the units were revived around midnight, the grid again failed at 12.15 AM, leading to tripping of unit number 5, 6, 7 and 8.
  • It may be mentioned that the 600 MW Khedar thermal plant is under scheduled maintenance for 15 days and 300 MW Yamunanagar plant has also not been functioning for the last two months. The state had been drawing more than 1000 MW from the Northern Grid to meet power shortage. Power demand in the state is more than 1,023 lakh units while the supply is around 898 lakh units. Roshan Lal Gupta, vice-president of Haryana Veopar Mandal, said that power interruptions had brought industrial production to a standstill. He said that despite making tall claims about overcoming power shortage, the state government had proved to be a complete failure.
