Night Power Cuts in All Dist HQs

  • Worst fears of the students and parents about the power cuts during the nights have come true on Wednesday when the power distribution companies slapped one-hour 'load relief' in all the district headquarters.Curiously, discoms went ahead with the additional load relief despite a heated discussion at the collectors' conference held in Hyderabad on the increased power cuts across the state. The power cut came into force from Wednesday night. With the latest move of the power utilities, the district headquarters will, now, face a five-hour load-shedding everyday, including four hours during the day time. While the district headquarters themselves facing five-hour power cut, the situation has turned more worse in towns and rural areas.
  • According to sources, the rural areas were languishing in darkness for almost 12 hours everyday, including six-hour night-time power cuts. Students fear the power cuts during nights may get longer in the coming months since the situation was grim even in winter. "In addition to the regular load relief, we are forced to carry out emergency load relief (ELR) due to the increasing pressure on the supply lines. We need to protect the supply system even by extending the power cuts by few more hours," said a senior official of southern power distribution company limited (SPDCL).
  • Electricity department sources said the power consumption has jumped to almost 60 million units a day in the last two days in the SPDCL limits against the last year's consumption of just around 30-35 million units. "Long spells of power cuts during the night time is worrisome as the annual examinations for all classes are nearing," said Srihari, administrator of a private school here. Curiously, the district collectors, who directed the school education department to conduct extra classes in the evening hours for SSC students of ZP and municipal schools, have not uttered a word about the situation at the collectors conference on Wednesday.
