Coal India to Use GPS for Coal Movement

  • Coal India, the largest coal producing company in the world has decided to set up a monitoring system for movement of coal through Global Positioning System (GPS).The system is planned to be installed in all mines of Coal India by 31st December, 2011.A maharatna company, Coal India has 81 mining areas and produces around 81.1 percent of India's overall coal production.
  • According to experts the implementation of GPS will help in checking pilferage of coal during its movement from mine to the point of loading.Replying to a question in Lok Sabha, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil, minister of state, Ministry of Coal, said "CIL is selling coal on ''Free On Rail'' (FOR) basis and the transport of coal from the mine face to the point of loading is the responsibility of CIL so it has been decided to set up a monitoring system for movements of coal''.
