IOC, ONGC Begin With the Right Moves in PSPB Inter-Unit Chess

  • Defending champions Indian Oil Corporation and runners-up ONGC took the early lead after the first two rounds, jointly leading with 7.5 points out of a possible 8, in the 23rd PSPB inter-unit chess tournament, being hosted by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), at HP Nagar in Chembur, on Saturday.The leaders are closely followed by BPCL, who tallied 6.5 points. Grandmaster K Sashikaran of ONGC (Elo 2689), the top seed, beat A Baruab in a Sicilian Najdorf variation with black pieces, winning in 26 moves.
  • In other action, current National champion and GM Parimarjan Negi (Elo 2617) of BPCL outwitted TS Ravi (Elo 2327) of IOC with white pieces in a Carro-Cann defence game. Negi then went on to defeat teammate Vaibhav Suri (Elo 2448) in 33 moves.Seventeen-year-old International Master Vidit Gujrathi of ONGC defeated unrated Girish Nayak of MRPL with ease in 22 moves in the Queen's Gambit with white pieces.
