• Andhra Pradesh, which is facing energy shortfall on a daily basis, has decided to press with the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, Government of India, the matter relating to the supply of natural gas to gas-based independent power producers. There has been a reduction in gas supply by RIL and this resulted in gas generation being restricted to only 1,450 mw as against 1,700 mw earlier.There has also been decrease in allocation of power from central generating stations (CGS) to an extent of 185 mw by government of India. Andhra Pradesh also wanted the GoI to restore this 185 mw allocation from the CGS to the state to meet the widening power shortage.
• Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the power utilities officials to explore the possibilities of purchasing additional power from generators located within Southern region.The power utilities in the state are able to supply around 216 million units per day while the demand is around 242 mu per day, an increase of 26 per cent compared to 192 mu last year. The high demand has been attributed to continuous dry-spell in the state.There is a deficit of 26 mu per day due to decrease in availability of power from various generating stations. For instance, NTPC Simhadri (500 mw) unit, which is in outage since November 18. It is likely to be restored in a day. Similarly, Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant (500 mw) unit of state generator APGENCO is likely to be restored by December 25. The power supply position is expected to improve after restoration of two units of 500 mw each.
• The hydel generation this year also has been much less due to less inflows. In the absence of hydel generation, APTransco/Discoms are forced to impose emergency load relief in case of forced tripping of thermal units.Due to various technical problems and coal shortage, there has been loss of 180 mw from NTPC Talcher and Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), according to a statement issued by the government.
