Guwahati, Jorhat to Be Made Model Solar Cities

  • The Union ministry of new and renewable energy has sanctioned a project aimed at converting Guwahati and Jorhat into model solar cities to fight global warming and a Mumbai-based company has completed the required survey for the project.Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) chairperson Prasanta Bora said, "The Mumbai-based company completed its survey this month and we are ready to launch the solar project in these towns."He added, "The project will initially be implemented in government lifeline buildings and public places and in view of this, the JMB, in association with the concerned company, has already started an awareness campaign in community buildings like Unnayan Supermarket, ONGC building, the Assam Agriculture University campus. We have also decided to start an awareness campaign in colleges and other educational institutions."He added the major chunk of the project would be run by a government subsidiary as the government would provide 90% subsidiary for each project.
  • A senior consultant of the project implementing company said, "It is a five-year energy implementation project and will be implemented in the two cities of Jorhat and Guwahati. However, similar project proposals for Tinsukia, Silchar and Nagaon have also been sent to the Centre for required sanctions."The Centre had taken up this project due to the rising concerns on global warming. The model solar city project would result in cutting down the conventional power by using solar, biomass, wind and zeo-thermal energy as its supplement. The ministry concerned has already selected 60 cities across the country to implement the project. Among the 60 cities, five cities have been selected from Assam and the project proposal for Jorhat and Guwahati have been sanctioned so far.
