Traffic Suffers from Road Repair Work

  • With the beginning of repair work of Cantonment Railway Station-Andhrapul Crossing Road, the commuters on the busiest crossings, Andhrapul and Chowkaghat, suffered badly on Wednesday. After chief minister Mayawati's December 20, 2008 announcement of launching of 28 development projects in the city, the PWD had started constructing a four-lane flyover between Cantonment roadways bus depot and Chowkaghat in 2009. In the initial phase, a two-lane flyover was constructed in the eastern lane of this road. With the beginning of this project, the condition of Cantonment railway station and Chowkaghat had worsened.
  • When the PWD was beginning the second phase works of the flyover construction project, principal secretary (chief minister) DS Mishra visited the project site and asked the agency's officials to show where the service lanes would be created under the flyover. As the PWD officials failed to show the land for service lane on floor, Mishra ordered to stop the second phase work. Though this work was stopped, the state government could not decide the fate of the project. Due to it neither the second phase work, in which a parallel two-lane flyover had to be constructed on the western lane of this road as per initially sanctioned project, could be started so far nor could the road under two lane flyover be constructed.
  • According to traffic inspector Vinay Chauhan, as per the decision of the district administration, the PWD started repairing the Cantonment railway station-Chowkaghat Road from Wednesday. Due to it the traffic movement on roads between Cantonment railway station and Andhrapul, and Andhrapul and Chowkaghat was totally stopped. The movement of vehicles was allowed only on Teliabagh-Nadesar via Andhrapur and Teliabagh-Hukulganj road via Chowkaghat. The vehicles reaching these crossings from Nadesar, Hukulganj and Teliabagh areas were not allowed to turn towards right or left to move from Andhrapul and Chowkaghat crossings.
  • Chauhan said it increased load on roadways depot-Lohamandi Maldahiya-Marimai Road as all the vehicles heading towards Andhrapul from Cantonment railway station side came on this road. The traffic suffered for hours near Marimai Crossing as the buses of Azamgarh and Jaunpur routes also came on Teliabagh-Andhrapul Road after coming down from the flyover at Chowkaghat. Chauhan said the same reason resulted a jam-like situation. He said to keep the traffic regulated on this road, half of the traffic police were deployed at Andhrapul, Cantonment roadways depot, Marimai crossing, Teliabagh and Chowkaghat.Despite the tall claims of the official concerned, the commuters suffered a lot on all those roads as the traffic regulation exercise by traffic police could not yield any positive result till late in the afternoon. As many vehicles were entering the areas where the road repairing was in progress, the work also suffered.
