Odisha: Road Construction on Full Swing in Malkangiri

  • Those commuting on Malkangiri-Balimela state highway road are heaving a huge sigh of relief as the construction  work on this  30 km stretch road is on full swing.“If everything goes well, we are hopeful of throwing the road open to public within the deadline of two years set for the completion of the project,” Hyderabad based LEKCON company who is executing the 33 crore estimated project work on behalf of A.P based KCL-AMRCL(Joint Venture) source said. The company has also been tendered the 44 crore rupees estimated Balimela-Spillway, 33 crore Kalimela-Podia and 76 crore estimated Kalimela-Motu road project works.
  • Earlier, open manholes, potholes, uneven roads, all were made the road unsafe. The busy road, where thousands of vehicles ply each day, the raised manholes with their poorly built structure had also caused many accidents, mostly at night. Drainage overflow was always a problem in the stretch of the road and in order to solve this, the Roads & Building department was made several strides, but leaving the manholes in this condition was leaving motorists to jitter.
  •  The Department which earlier allotted the works to local private contractors rarely shown concern for the convenience of people. According to the residents, the carelessness was such that a newly laid substandard road was not lasted long.. "The contractors were only concerned about finishing the work, while compromising with the quality, said a Nuagaon based 58 year old tribal resident Rama Krisani.
  • We are working on war footing keeping the difficulties being faced by the commuters, company sources said. The construction of culverts at different places on the route is also on full swing. We are happy that the road construction work has gained momentum in the region. We would suffer no more; said Tarlakota based Businessman Tarun Dey.Once the road work is completed, it would take less than 45 minutes for a motorist to cover the 30 km long route. Now, it is taking more than two hours to cover the only 30 km long distance, he said.
