‘Red Line’ As Green Light for Toll Gates: Traffic cops

  • Even as the protests for removing toll plazas are gaining momentum, the city police are planning to draw a red line near toll plazas on the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. The toll gates would be opened for free passage as soon as a vehicle pile-up crosses that line. Cops say the convenience of commuters is their first priority and, whether the private concessionarie likes it or not, they would open the gates as soon the line is crossed.DCP (traffic) Bharti Arora said, "A team of cops will soon visit the toll plaza to decide the spot to draw the line. Traffic jams have become the norm on the e-way and this step is being taken to resolve the issue. In another measure to decongest toll plazas, the police have suggested that the private concessionaire, DSC Ltd, introduce mobile ticketing system where toll employees will go to drivers waiting in the queue and issue them tickets, thus reducing the vehicular clearance time on gates.
  • These decisions were taken during a meeting held on Tuesday which was attended by officials from the district administration, Gurgaon police, the NHAI, HUDA, the MCG and the private developer. The district administration has also asked the DSC Ltd to increase manpower at the 32-lane toll plaza and at Kherki Dhaula. Also, the firm was directed to submit a list of employees involved in toll management to the office of traffic police, so that cops can carry out periodic surprise inspections.Deputy commissioner P C Meena said there was inadequate staff with the firm for vehicular management at the toll plaza. Meena added that the NHAI was also asked to expedite the work of constructing more toll gates at the two toll plazas. The administration has a copy of concession agreement to see the provisions of opening of toll gates if there are long traffic jams. Sources said that the issue of opening the Udyog Vihar road towards the expressway was also discussed in the meeting. Soon, action will be initiated in the case after a copy of the court's order is received, a source said.
