Cold Freezes Road Repair Work

  • The cold is now starting to slow down the pace of repair and construction of city roads. As a result, a number of roads under Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) are lying damaged and dilapidated. While the work of repair and construction of roads had gained momentum after monsoons in the month of September, the fall in mercury has suspended the work for the past one week."The coldwave and foggy conditions in the region have definitely slowed down the repair and construction of roads that were damaged in the monsoon season. While the patching work is still being done in some of the roads, the construction work including that of building pavements on the sides and drains have been stopped. We are waiting for the winter chill to go down to resume the work. It seems that the work could only gather momentum either by the end of January or after that," said UN Tripathi, chief engineer, VNN.
  • A reality check by TOI of various city roads under VNN on Wednesday also revealed the slow progress made in work under the calamity relief fund as most of the roads leading to residential and commercial areas were in a dilapidated condition. While the road leading to Gandhi Nagar Colony in Sigra had been constructed, other roads including Sigra-Madhopur in the same locality were left unattended. Another adjacent road in Sonia area under VNN had only started to witness laying of boulders for the patch work while the uprooted and potholes-laden road was evident in Rewari Talab and Rampaura area that linked it to the commercial hub of the city in Gadaulia area.
  • It may be mentioned here that a total of Rs 4.39 crore were released under calamity relief fund for repair and construction of as many as 22 severely damaged roads under VNN in the city. As per reports of VNN office, the repair and construction of roads began in the month of November after culmination of festive season.According to the chief engineer, the repair and construction of as many as 16 out of 22 targeted roads had started simultaneously, but the cold conditions prevailing for the past one week halted the progress. "The work like construction of pavements and pucca drains had been stopped and would resume after winter season," he added.
