More, Cheaper Power Soon?

  • Power consumers in Mumbai and the state can expect more power, cheaper, and, of course, the freedom to buy it from any supplier in the near future.
  • The Union ministry of power, after receiving the legal viewpoint from the Union ministry of law and justice, has announced full freedom to bulk consumers (more than 1 MW power daily) to buy efficient, cheaper power of their choice from any generator in the country... which it has termed as 'open access'.
  • Experts said it is the first decision towards a competent and liberal power market. If roughly over 12,000 bulk consumers, who consume around 30% of the power in the state, switch over to suppliers of their choice outside, it will make the same cheaper power available to more residential and agricultural consumers. It will also help wipe out the four-eight hour load-shedding in parts of the state and bring down the tariff.
