  • India produces only 34 million tonne of oil against its consumption of 140 million tonne, a senior official of state-run ONGC said Tuesday."India has a 17 percent of world's population, but the nation is endowed with only 0.5 percent of the world available oil and gas resources," P K Rao, General Manager (Head Drilling Services) and Officiating Asset Manager, ONGC Rajahmundry, said in an official statement. He said ONGC contributes nearly 75 percent of the total domestic production.
  • He called on citizens to conserve oil in the face of unconstrained demand. To augment the energy security of the country, ONGC has set up Rajiv Gandhi Urja Bhavan in New Delhi for undertaking research on non-conventional sources of energy, he said.Taking the point further, Rao suggested like in advanced countries, there is a need for evolving efficiency norms for the vehicle in India to moderate the demand for fossil fuels. These norms can be on the lines of star ratings given by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), he added.
