VMC to Finish 5 Projects

  • The Vijayawada Munic-ipal Corporation (VMC) hastened development works under the JNNURM as the project tenure will conclude by March 2012. The VMC so far spent Rs.904 crore for the development of infrastructure and construction of houses in the city since 2004. The VMC has designed 20 projects at a cost of Rs.1,422.67 crore from 2004 to 2012 March. The civic body completed nine projects and is trying to complete another five projects by the end of March 2012. Two housing projects are unlikely to be grounded due to land acquisition problem.

  • In all, 12 projects were taken up under the Urban Infrastructure Governance (UIG) at a cost of Rs.679 crore and eight projects planned at a cost of Rs.743.31 crore under the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) for the development of slums. JNNURM works started in 2004-05. Government of India’s share is Rs.414 crore and state government’s share is Rs.158 crore of the total cost.The VMC gets revenue from local taxes on citizens, 13th Finance Commi-ssion grants, state and Central government grants to execute the works. The VMC is trying to ground some projects before Mar-ch 12, 2012 otherwise the Central government will cancel the allotted funds.
  • Under the Urban Infrastructure Governance (UIG), drinking water projects were completed with Rs.31 crore, sewerage system in Krishnalanka, Gunadala, Khuddus Nagar and Devinagar, etc., with Rs.27 crore. Besides, Rs.40 crore was spent for storm water drainage in three circles, Rs.36 crore for resto-ration of roads, Rs.50 crore for sewerage works in the northern part of the city and Rs.20 crore for replacement of sewerage plants in Ajit Singh Nagar etc.Under the BSUP, the VMC spent Rs.280 crore for construction of 8,000 houses in Jakkampudi. Works are going on at a brisk pace and is expected to complete by March 2012.
  • The municipal commissioner, Mr G. Ravi Babu, asked officials to ground pending works by March 2012 so that the allotted funds can be utilised. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), housing projects under phase III and IV, restoration of roads, implementation of e-governance project, augmentation of drinking water supply utility under JNNURM Phase II, providing UGD works are in progress.The commissioner said that the VMC is trying to complete at least another five projects by the end of March 2012.
