Small Solar Power Scheme Picks Up Momentum

  • About 26 mw capacity of solar power projects under rooftop PV and small solar power generation programme (RPSSGP) has been commissioned so far across the country, signaling a gradual pick up in growth momentum in the smaller solar power projects. These rooftop solar projects, in the capacity range of one and two mega watt, have been set up in states such as Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh. These projects have been commissioned and connected to the grid in the past 6-7 months period, according to a statement of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (Ireda).

  • The solar rooftop projects, coming under (RPSSGP), are part of the solar mission and will be connected at distribution network at voltage levels below 33 kV. About 100 mw of capacity is to be added through RPSSGP by 2013 .Union minister of new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah had recently asked the officials to prepare an action plan for introducing net metering in commercial and residential roof top solar projects in a bid to expand the use of solar power substantially in the country. Since the cost of solar power has fallen to Rs 8 per unit this year from Rs 18 per unit in 2010, it should be possible to allow consumers feed extra power to the grid, he added. “We expect high-end residential consumers to be proactive in adopting solar rooftop given their higher power tariffs. A large number of these consumers are likely to start adopting solar power from 2017-18. However, government involvement will be required in encouraging non-high end residential and agriculture consumers to use solar power from 2017-18.
