Panel Proposes Cab Signalling System in Railways

  • A panel on modernisation of Railways has recommended modern signaling technologies for maximising track utilisation and high speed operations with safety. The committee constituted by Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi in September last year is likely to submit its report next week.The panel headed by Mr. Sam Pitroda, who is currently advisor to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and innovation, has suggested a cab signaling system similar to the European Train Control System and conversion of mechanical system to electronic interlocking in about 5000 stations among some other measures for the modernisation of railways.
  • The panel has also suggested 10,000 crore rupees for investment in infrastructure in the next fiscal coinciding with the 12th Five-Year Plan.Besides, the panel has sought to expedite the installation of Train Protection Warning System on busy lines to prevent accidents. Massive up gradation of signaling, tracks, rolling stock, stations and terminals at an estimated cost over 50,000 crore rupees over the next five years are some other recommendations of the panel.The other members of the committee include MS Verma, former Chairman of State Bank of India and Professor Raghuram of IIM-Ahmedabad.
