Infrastructure for Added Areas, Road Repairs on the Cards

  • Works will commence in the second or third week of February.Residents of added areas and those who were silently suffering the ordeal of travelling on roads battered by the underground drainage (UGD) works in core city areas have good news in store. The civic body is getting ready to provide basic amenities such as drinking water, street lights and roads to areas that recently became part of Coimbatore Corporation.Similarly, roads that were dug up for UGD will also be re-laid. Regarding areas where the UGD works are in progress, the relaying works will be taken up immediately after the works are completed. The works will commence during the second or third week of February and the time frame for completion is before the setting in of the South-West monsoon in May-end or June first week.
  • Corporation officials pointed out that a proposal for Rs. 300-odd crore sent to the government for clearance was in the final stages.Officials anticipate sanction for projects worth more than Rs. 200 crore. The inflow funds under the Integrated Urban Renewal Mission will provide the much-required infrastructure to the added areas. The following up of the proposals, tender process and implementation are being closely monitored by Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy. The Corporation as on date has a little more than 2,000-odd km of roads in its jurisdiction. The length of the roads, which used to be less earlier had almost doubled because of the annexure of 11 abutting local bodies during the recent expansion exercise. Battered roads in these areas would be taken up for relaying. As far as UGD-battered roads are concerned, a funding of Rs. 51 crore has come in for relaying the damaged stretches.
