Dedicated Railway Lines for Movement of Food Grains

  • The Minister of State for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Mr. K.V.Thomas on Thursday said the Centre is working with the railways on setting up dedicated lines, specially designed wagons and special vehicles for the movement of food grains. He said the two-day conference on targeted public distribution system and storage that concluded in the capital on Thursday , discussed issues related to the successful implementation of the Food Security Bill.
  • Mr. Thomas said, efforts are on for redistribution of storage mechanism, modernisation of public distribution system and elimination of bogus ration cards. He said, several states including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh have shown substantial results due to computerisation, Aadhar and bio-metric system.Mr. Thomas said the storage capacity is being increased vigorously and the stock position is comfortable. He also said the Government has allowed export of ten lakh tonnes of wheat and 20 lakh tonnes of rice.Mr. Thomas added the cooperation of the States is foremost in the successful implementation of the Food Security Bill.
