Madurai Corporation Now RE-Laying Roads, Rs 15 Crore Earmarked

  • The city corporation has started re-laying of the battered roads in Madurai on Thursday.The civic body commenced the work in the 320-metre stretch from Kalavasal to Arasaradi, one of the back breaking stretching with dangerous potholes. Earthmovers were seen swiftly removing the layers of the damaged road to pave way for a fresh layer of bitumen. Traffic in one lane of the stretch was diverted to facilitate the road laying work, while vehicles from Kalavasal to Periyar bus stand and Simmakkal were diverted through alternative routes.The project is being carried out from a Rs 15 crore fund sanctioned by the state government for this fiscal to carry out the much-needed road development works.
  • The proposals for the project under 'Integrated Urban Development Scheme,' was placed before the city corporation council and the councillors unanimously gave the nod for the projects about 10 days back. Soon, the corporation invited tenders and allotted the work.The civic body had sought Rs 83.14 crore to repair the roads in the corporation limits, which were damaged by floods and digging for Vaigai second drinking water scheme. However, the government had sanctioned Rs 15 crore for this fiscal year while rest of Rs 68.14 crore will be sanctioned during the next financial year.
  • The corporation has divided road development works into 19 segments spread across various parts of the city. Altogether, a stretch of 33.49-km of the roads in 24 of the 100 wards of the city would be re-laid under the project. Among the key stretches are the Arapalayam Main Road for 200 metres, New Jail Road for 820 metres, Town Hall Road for 370 metres, Tamil Sangam Road for 335 metres, Vakkil New Street for 506 metres and Kamarajar Road for 1.4km.The civic body would subsequently take up road laying works in other stretches, much to the relief of the road-users.
