Avanashi Bypass Gets Ready for Use

  • From Palankarai to Pudupalayam, near Avanashi, a new road for 7.5 km is almost ready for use.The Avanashi bypass is part of the road widening project from Chengapalli to Walayar taken up by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Chengapalli-Walayar stretch widening works are expected to be completed by next March. The total project cost is Rs. 913 crore and is taken up under the build-operate-transfer basis for nearly 55 km.
  • The Avanashi bypass is one the three new bypasses proposed as part of the six-lane work on the NH 47 stretch. The other two are Perumanallur and KG Chavady bypasses. Since these towns have high density of population and vehicle use, it was decided to have bypasses for these three places. The Perumanallur and KG Chavady bypasses will be ready by next March. According to officials of the NHAI here, the Avanashi bypass is expected to be completed next month. It has come up at a cost of Rs. 140 crore and nearly 127 acres were acquired for this road. It passes through Rakkipalayam and Velayuthampalayam.
  • The road will be one of the widest in this region as it is a six-lane stretch with two-lane service roads (seven metres wide) on either side. Since the NH 47 is a high speed stretch with a rapidly growing vehicle usage, the bypass has been designed to have partial access control. This means there will be designated entry and exit points on this slightly elevated road. For every one km, there are points where the vehicles can take a u-turn, an official of the NHAI explains.Further, the main six-lane road and the service lanes are separated. Vehicles that want to travel for a short distance can use the service lanes.
