Minister Criticises Protests Against Toll

  • Minister inaugurates women's hostel in city.People's protests against toll for new roads and bridges is likely to affect the planning for new projects, said the Minister for Public Works, V. K. Ebrahim Kunju.Inaugurating a working women's hostel at Kakkanad here on Thursday, he said that people who are protesting against tolls do not give a thought to the time and money saved by travelling on good quality roads.The Government has given maximum relief to the people of the place where toll collection has been set up, he said.Projects that are beneficial to people are getting stalled because of the protests by some organizations, he said.

RING ROAD PROJECT

  • He said all factors should be considered while planning for developmental projects like the Rs. 3,000-crore Ring Road project that is coming up soon to connect Kochi city with nearby areas.The Minister said that a PWD Rest House would be coming up at Thrikkakara soon and the construction of the District Collector's bungalow would start soon.Sanction has been given to take up maintenance work for the roads connecting Thrikkakara municipality with the city, he added.
  • At the function, Benny Behnan, MLA, presided.District Collector, P. I. Sheikh Pareeth, Thrikkakara Municipal chairman, P. I. Mohammed Ali, vice-chairperson, Sherin Shukkur, chief engineer, PWD, P. K. Satheesan and superintending engineer E. J. Polly were among those who spoke.The Government had earlier completed the work of women's hostel in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. Besides government officers, rooms would be reserved for women working in recognised private institutions as well.

APPLICATIONS

  • For hostel accommodation applications need to be filled in stipulated forms available from the Buildings Division of PWD office at Edappally. The 96 rooms in the hostel can accommodate 192 women.Furniture worth Rs. 45 lakh has also been bought.A committee led by the District Collector would take care of the functioning of the hostel.
