AP Govt to Bring Out Policy on Developing Greenfield Airports

  • Andhra Pradesh government today announced that it would soon come out with a policy for development of regional greenfield airports in the state. The government is currently pursuing a proposal for setting up new greenfield airports at different locations in the state, according to Infrastructure, Investments and Airports Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao. Replying to a question raised by TDP MLAs Tummala Nageswara Rao, A Revanth Reddy and others during Question Hour in the Assembly today, the Minister said, the Airports Authority of India has assessed that Kurnool, Nellore, Tadepalligudem, Ongole, Nizamabad and Ramagundam towns were feasible for setting up regional airports. "The Ministry of Defence has raised some objections to the sites at Nizamabad and Ramagundam. Besides, there has been recession in the sector and the proposals now require to be re-evaluated," Srinivasa Rao said. Tummala said there was need for ensuring connectivity between regional airports and international airports for the convenience of passengers flying abroad. The Minister assured that the government would come out with an "aggressive policy" for development of greenfield airports by June. He said the newly-constructed and modernised terminal building at Rajahmundry airport would be inaugurated on March 4. PTI DBV NP
