Workshop on FS&S Act & Regulations Emphasises on Oil As Key Ingredient

  • Oil is an important ingredient and those in the oil business need to comply with the requirement of the new FSS Act, 2006. This was pointed out at a workshop on Food Safety and Standards Act and Regulations organised by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEAI) at a Mumbai hotel on Saturday.Delivering the welcome address, B V Mehta, executive director, SEAI, explained what the Act was all about and informed that the speakers would talk the attendees through the Schedule 4 Requirement with special emphasis on oils and fats.
  • And it was quite a distinguished panel - Sushil Goenka, president, SEAI; Dr A R Sharma, member, FSSAI’s expert group on oils and fats; and Dr S S Ghonkrokta, director (enforcement), FSSAI, New Delhi. They were joined on the dais by Mahesh Zagade, commissioner, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Maharashtra; Dilip Shrirao, joint commissioner of police (vigilance), FDA, Maharashtra; and Prabodh Halde, manager (product integrity), Marico Limited, and convener of the workshop. At the first session, Shrirao said, “Being a police officer, I already have a lot on my plate. Please make life easy for both of us. Do a self-audit,” and the crowd burst into peals of laughter. However, the seriousness of the matter was not lost on them. “Now, even your neighbourhood wada-pav stall owner will have to register,” he added.
  • Halde’s presentation was about the changes that had taken place between 1954, when the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act came into being, and 2006, when the foundation for the FSSAI was laid. It was in the form of a slide-show. The slides were on various topics, including the salient features of the new Act, the comparison between the two and even the penalties. The group dispersed for a short break for tea. When the session resumed, Halde talked the crowd through the licensing and registration procedure and clarified a few concepts that have been defined by those who framed the new Act.
