Iran Gasoline Consumption Cuts By 833 Million Liters

  • Gasoline consumption in Iran stood at around 18.2 billion liters in the first ten months of the current calendar year started on March 21st 2011 showing 833 million liters decline compared to the figure for the same period last year. The average daily consumption of gasoline was nearly 57.8 million liters during the 10 month period down 2.6 million liters thanks to the implementation of the Subsidy Reform Plan. The plan, launched in December 2010 allows the Iranian government to gradually slash subsidies on fuel, electricity and certain goods over the course of 5 years with low income families being compensated with direct cash handouts
  • According to the Iranian oil ministry, Iran’s gasoline consumption is falling rapidly thanks to higher prices and compressed natural gas use helping soften the blow of Western sanctions that ban fuel sales to the Islamic Republic. Western governments have blocked gasoline supplies to Iran over the last few years to pressure Tehran over its disputed nuclear program. But Iran has succeeded in significantly reducing its reliance on gasoline by tapping the world’s second largest natural gas reserves to make CNG and slashing subsidies to discourage gasoline use.
  • Mr Alireza Zeighami MD of of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said that Iran’s gasoline production will rise next year by 18 million liters or about 118,000 barrels per day. The increase in output is expected after completing development projects at seven refineries.
