Land Ports Authority of India Becomes Operational From March 1

  • The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) became operational today with the Ministry of Home Affairs notifying its establishment under the Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010.The LPAI comprises a Chairman and two whole-time Members and will have representation of officials concerned from the Centre and the States.The Office of the Land Ports Authority of India shall temporarily be located at Vigyan Bhawan Annexe till the LPAI sets up its own headquarters in New Delhi.

  • The LPAI has been tasked with the responsibility of putting in place systems which address security imperatives relating to the cross border movement of passengers, vehicles and goods as also developing Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) at designated points along the international borders of India.In the first phase, seven ICPs are proposed to be set up, of which five are under construction. The ICP at Attari is expected to be operationalised shortly.The LPAI would function as a body corporate under the Department of Border Management, Ministry of Home Affairs, an official press release added.
