Magisterial Inquiry Ordered in BCPL Firing Incident

  • A magisterial inquiry has been ordered today into the firing incident at the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) project site at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh district in which one person was killed and three others got injured. Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Aruna Rajoria has directed Additional Deputy Commissioner PK Rajkhowa to conduct the inquiry into the yesterday's incident and submit the report within a week. A compensation of Rs two lakh would also be paid to the next of kin of the person killed and job provided to one member of the victim's family in the project. Meanwhile, the labourers of BCPL ceased work in protest and all work at the project site was suspended. Assam Industry Minister Pradyut Bordoloi and Labour Minister Prithbi Majhi have rushed to the project site to convince the labourers to resume work. A citizens meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner, was held here today to bring the situation back to normal. CISF DIG Ajay Kumar said that they have also ordered an inquiry and the security personnel on duty yesterday have been withdrawn from work till the inquiry was over. "Our inquiry is on and if anybody is found guilty, they will be punished accordingly," he added. One person, identified as Montu Munda, was killed and three others seriously injured when CISF personnel allegedly opened fire to disperse irate labourers following an argument. BCPL is a joint venture of GAIL, ONGC, Oil India Limited, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and Assam government.
