Mines Ministry Asks MECL to Step Up Exploratory Activities

  • ET reported that Mineral Exploration Corporation has been asked to step up exploration to meet the growing need of raw materials by industries.Chairing a parliamentary consultative committee meeting on MECL's present status and future plans for growth, mines minister Mr Dinsha Patel said. that the performance of MECL has improved in 2010-11 as compared to the previous year.

  • The PSU, under the administrative control of Mines Ministry, had posted a pre tax profit of INR 17.25 crore during the last fiscal.The minister said that "Company has also improved its physical performance in drilling and developmental mining ... detailed exploration carried out by MECL has led to opening of several mines in the country.”In addition, MECL has also made a sizeable contribution in exploration inputs for energy minerals coal, lignite and CBM, Mr Patel said adding, these resulted in country's coal output increasing to over 400 million tonnes at present from a mere 75 million tonne in 1973.
