Renewable Sector Payment Issues Cause Concerns

  • The issues relating to non-payment or delay in payments to investors and private players in the renewable sector would lead to loss of confidence and that would prove to be disastrous, as the green sector is running on a tight budget, warned union secretary for new and renewable energy, G B Pradhan.“It is not complaint, but I am saying that it is tight rope walk for green energy players. If the revenues are not flowing in, then the show will fold up quickly. While the conventional power segment that are run by companies having deep pockets, unfortunately renewable energy companies are running on a very tight budget. So, if the revenues don’t flow, the game will be over,” he said addressing the Renergy 2012, an international conference-cum-exhibition on green energy sector here.

  • He also highlighted that if the confidence is lost among the investors, then it will be very difficult to bring it back. Citing a similar situation that the thermal power sector witnessed in the nineties after the collapse of companies and projects, he stated that it took about 14 years for the private sector to again enter the coal-fired power projects with some confidence.“Let us allow the revenue streams to flow in and the payments are made on a timely basis,” he added. His comments come on the back drop of non-payment, delay in payments to the private investors in states like Tamil Nadu, which is though on the forefront of harnessing wind power in the country.

  • Earlier Pradhan said the country is on track to reach phase one target of 1,000 mw of solar power under the national solar mission. India will double the present renewable energy installed capacity of about 24,000 mw in the next five years, he added.Admitting that evacuation and transmission are posing big challenges in the renewable energy sector, Pradhan pointed out that Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has been mandated to prepare a report on various solutions and required investments to be made in evacuation infrastructure for green power. The report, which will broadly look into the integration of renewable energy power with the grid in the wind and solar-rich states, will also focus on forecasting and predictability areas, among others. The report is expected to be submitted by the end of this month.
