Govt Discontinues Tax Benefit for Infrastructure Bond Buyers: Official

  • The government will discontinue an Rs 20,000 tax exemption given to retail investors buying infrastructure bonds from the fiscal year beginning April 1, Finance Secretary R.S. Gujral said Tuesday.The government had offered the tax benefit for two years to help infrastructure financing companies raise long-term capital.The tax benefit will be allowed to lapse as the government has doubled the limit on tax-free bonds to be issued by some companies next year to Rs 600 billion for financing the infrastructure sector, Gujral said.
