Odisha: Paradip Port Union Demands Rename Paradeep Port Into Biju Patnaik Port

  • Report by Kahnu Nanda; Jagatsinghpur: The Paradip Port Workers' Union (PPWU), a leading trade union working at the port town who has received a labour representative in Paradeep port trust board election held recently has demanded that the port be renamed as Biju Patnaik Port.

  • Speaking at the PPWU hosted victory celebration held at Badapadia on Monday, PPWU designate labour trustee and veteran trade union leader Sudhakar Mantry urged both union and state governments to rename Paradeep port as Biju Patnaik port, PPWU working president Mr Mantry said legendary Biju Pattnaik was instrumental in setting up the Paradeep port in the mid sixties.

  • Meanwhile PPWU had submitted a memorandum in this regard to union shipping minister G K Vasan during his visit for the ports golden jubilee celebration two months ago but no needful steps have taken till date so he appealed all the trade unions functioning in Paradeep, political parties, people of state to be united and mounting pressure on government for this endeavor, he maintained.

  • Addressing his unions victory celebration Mr Mantry expressed his satisfaction and greeted the employees, workers of PPT who gave their votes in favour of PPWU a HMS affiliated trade union who emerged victorious getting highest votes during trust board polls and sought co operation from fellow trade union friends to sort out problems affecting the employees and on an overall development of the Paradep port.

  • PPWU president and HMS leader Rajendra Prasad Singh, secretary Ananta Das, Gagan Mohanty, were spoke on the occasion earlier a motor cycle rally was kicked start from Nishamani Bhawan taking PPWU leaders accompanying labour trustee designate Sudhakar Mantry and covered entire port town later reached at meeting venue at Badapadia.
