95 NHAI Projects Delayed Due to Law & Order Problems: Govt

  • The government today said 95 projects implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been delayed due to land acquisition and law and order problems in various states.

  • "Ninety five projects implemented by NHAI and 126 projects by various state Public Works Departments (PWDs) and Border Roads Organisation ( BRO) have been delayed," Minister of State for Road, Transport and Highways Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

  • "The delays have occurred due to various reasons such as delay in land acquisition, shifting of utilities, obtaining environment, forest clearances and railway approvals, poor performance of contractors and law & order problems in the states," Prasada said.

  • "These projects are at various stages of implementation and hence, actual time and cost over-run can be ascertained only after completion of the projects," he said.

  • The government has taken various steps to mitigate delays, which include setting up regional offices by NHAI, setting up of special land acquisition units, he said.

  • It is also setting up high-powered committees to resolve the bottlenecks relating to shifting of utilities, land acquisition issues, etc.

  • The delayed projects are closely monitored and periodically reviewed, he added.
