Central Railways Crosses 100 Million Tonne Mark in Freight Loading

  • South Central Railways crossed the 100 million tonne mark in its freight loading this fiscal, becoming the fourth zone in the Indian Railways to achieve this mark. The other three zones that handled this level of throughput are the South East Central, East Cost and South Eastern Railways.

  • The zone is likely to end the fiscal with a total throughput of 103 million tonne, as against 96 million tonne handled last fiscal. In terms of revenue, freight constituted about 70% of its originating earnings.

  • Freight earnings of the zone are expected to increase from INR 3,573 crore in 2008-09 to INR 5,764 crore this fiscal. Coal contributed the largest to its freight portfolio, despite disruptions in operations at the Singareni Collieries Co Ltd due to the Telangana strike earlier this fiscal.

  • Coal traffic is expected to touch 53 million tonne this fiscal, as against 48 million tonne last fiscal. Foodgrains, however, registered the highest increase of 18% at 7.4 million tonne (6.2 million tonne). It handled 85 rakes a day this fiscal, as against 77 rakes last fiscal.
