Bypass Widening to Begin

  • Statutory notification needed for acquisition of land for the construction of the long-awaited Kazhakuttam-Kaliyikavila four-lane NH-47 bypass has been issued.MP Dr Shashi Tharoor’s office in a statement here on Monday disclosed that the notification under Section 3A of the National Highways Act, 1956 for acquisition of land for the bypass has been published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary) on March 22.

  • The NHAI authorities are expected to publish the notification containing the full details of the land to be acquired, in the newspapers in a couple of days.Shashi Tharoor had been taking up the matter with the highest authorities at the centre, including the minister for road transport and highways Mr C.P Joshi, the statement said.After completing acquisition of land sufficient for a 27 km four-lane road between Kazhakuttam, a two-lane stretch of 22 km between Kazhakuttam and Kovalam junction was completed about 15 years back, the work had come to a standstill.

  • The total cost of the project, which will be under BOT, is expected to be around Rs 750 crores. A total of 70.65 ha will have to be acquired on the 17 km Kottukall-Karode stretch.In addition, a total of 25.26 ha will have to be additionally acquired on the 22 km Kazhak- uttam-Kottukal stretch for structures such as bridges, culverts, and viaducts.The whole project will include construction of four major bridges including a new bridge at Aakulam, 60 culverts, one rail over bridge at Chakai and 11 under- passes, the statement said.
