BMC to float INR 6 crore Tenders to sweep Bandra-Kurla Complex

Even as 20 mechanized brooms bought for INR 13 crore in 2007 are lying idle in the civic garage at Santa Cruz, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to allot a INR 6 crore tender to keep Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) clean using similar machines.

The five year contract, which will be awarded by the BMC, says that the contractor should clean the business district using his own mechanized brooms. A proposal to award this contract will be tabled at the civic standing committee on Wednesday.

"BKC is a business district; it is important that it is kept clean. Hence, we have decided to appoint a contractor," said a civic official. The official said that BKC is under the jurisdiction of the MMRDA and hence, the cost of cleaning will be recovered from the agency.

More than six years ago, the BMC had bought the 20 hi-tech brooms to ensure effective cleaning of city roads as "civic labourers could not clean roads properly". But the machines were soon damaged due to lack of knowledge on how to operate them and poor maintenance.
