DPR of Flyover Project: PWD issues directive

<p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Finally Public Works Department (PWD), Railway and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have given the green signal for the proposed Kollam flyover project.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The PWD has asked the Chief Engineer of Roads and Bridges to submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the proposal with the help of Kerala State Construction Corporation.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The project was designed by city&nbsp;based activist M K Salim and it was approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.&nbsp;</span></span></span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">The proposed flyover starts from the SMP Palace and passes over the railway line and ends near Chinnakkada Bus Stand through Beach Road.&nbsp;</span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">The one kilometre long bridge will have one way traffic and the other Chinnakkada flyover will also be made one way once the work of the new bridge gets finished.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">&ldquo;It will help end the traffic problems and hope vehicles will be able to move at 50 Km per hour in the city.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The added advantage of the project is that it does not require any land acquisition or building demolition,&rdquo; M K Salim said.&nbsp;</span></span></span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">He also said that the portion of the bridge over the railway line would be considered as Railway Over Bridge (ROB) and fund for the construction of this portion would be made available by the Railway.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">When contacted, a top PWD official said:&rdquo;Hope the Chief Engineer will submit the Detailed Project Report within three months.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">At present, we have no clue about the feasibility of the project.&nbsp;</span></span></span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">Let them study about the project and submit the report&rdquo;.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The Public Works Department official also said that after estimating the cost of the project they would try to get the fund either from the Centre or state plan fund.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Source-On Request</span></span></span></p>
