Local residents have questioned the very need to take up road widening and feel the money could used in improving condition of the road.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation started widening of the internal road in Pande Layout and earmarked INR 38 lakh for the purpose. Residents of the locality are quite upset with the work. A group of residents pointed out that the traffic on the road is very less. Instead, NMC should have improved the condition of existing roads in entire locality. They claimed that the work was being carried out to please two political bigwigs MP Datta Meghe and Maharashtra minister Rajendra Mulak who live in the vicinity.

Even then quality of road widening work is not up to the mark, pointed out M Joshi, a local resident. He alleged that the widened portion of the road would hardly last for a few months as bitumen was being laid without preparing the ground underneath. "In order to protect citizens from passing vehicles, the civic body could have constructed footpaths. But they are widening the road," said Joshi.

"Ultimately, it is a tax payers' money and it should be utilized properly. Even the quality of road work is also not proper. Roads in adjoining localities like Sahakar Nagar, Somalwada are worse. Instead of repairing them, how could civic body think of widening one road," asked a retired government official and a resident of the nearby locality, A S Ingle.

Laxmi Nagar zone's assistant municipal commissioner GM Rathod assured to look into the matter, while junior engineer S S Rangari claimed that it was demand from residents following which the widening work is being taken up. He denied it was taken up to please MP and MLA.

Residents wondered how NMC could waste so money that could have been better utilized. Condition of most of the city roads is dismal. Great Nag Road, Kamptee Road, stretch between Kadbi Chowk to Gondwana square, Kalamna ring road are among the few that need attention. In such a scenario, splurging on one internal road that does not even have much traffic defies explanation, residents felt.

Source-On Request
