The Union Ministry of Shipping has cleared the tender submitted by the company. “The Adani Group was the only bidder which responded to the tender invited in November 2013. It was forwarded to the Ministry of Shipping for approval,” said a top official of the Cochin Port Trust (CPT).

The successful bidder will run the terminal for a period of 30 years. The estimated cost of the project is `198 crore. The CPT is offering 14 acres of land for the project and a 300-metre-long berth. The new terminal, being developed on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis, will cater to the steel and cement industries in Kerala and neighbouring states. Once the modern terminal starts functioning, coal will be handled in a covered facility.

The terminal, which located at the port’s existing north coal berth and south coal berth on the Mattanchery Wharf side will have the capacity to handle 4.23 metric tonnes per annum. It will combine together the North and South coal berths. Currently, the port handles about 1,000 tonnes of coal on an average per year.

The terminal is being developed on the basis of an earlier proposal that the coal handling facilities at Cochin Port Trust may be augmented because it is a major port on the African route.

Source-On Request
