The wait has been long and annoying, but motorists and commuters travelling to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and beyond will soon have a smooth, hassle free ride. Work on the six lane highway is almost complete barring the Bagalur flyover. But officials say work on this also will be complete within a week's time.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working hard to have the completed expressway inaugurated on January 26, Republic Day. Officials, however, say a final decision on the inauguration will be taken by officials in Delhi.

"All work on the ground will be completed by then (Jan 26)," an NHAI official said. "We have requested the Union ministry of surface transport to open the flyover as a Republic Day event. The final decision will be taken at the ministry level in Delhi."

Currently, vehicles are allowed to ply on the six-lane highway from Hebbal (Esteem Mall) to Yelahanka bypass. From there, motorists travelling to KIA and beyond have to continue the journey on the service road. The expressway reduces travel time between Hebbal and KIA by half. "The Bagalur flyover will be completed in a day or two and only small works such as barricading and lane marking will be left," an official said.

One issue which remains unresolved is the lack of service road near the IAF air base. An NHAI official said the defence department would have to part with land for the service road. Once the expressway is complete, motorists will have to cough up a higher toll. Currently, cars are charged Rs 20 for a one way trip, while LCVs have to pay INR 30, bus/truck INR 60 and multi-axle vehicles INR 95. An official said, "The current toll is for the existing road. It will be increased once work is completed. We have not yet decided on the quantum of increase."

Cops have warned against speeding. Girish S, DCP (Traffic, West), said, "We will ensure people dont' cross speed limits." NHAI officials said a speed limit of 80 Kmph is likely to be set.

Source-On Request
