Jawahar Tunnel to be modernised: DG Border Roads

<p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The Director General (DG) Border Roads (BR) Lt General, AT Parnaik, on Thursday said Jawahar tunnel connecting Kashmir with Jammu will be modernised.&nbsp;</span></span></span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">In view of recent snowfall, Lt General Parnaik today visited Jawahar Tunnel on the Srinagar-Jammu highway and reviewed its security and safety measures.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Chairing a meeting there Lt General Parnaik said Jawahar Tunnel is the life line of the Jammu and Kashmir. &ldquo;All possible measures are being taken for its maintenance and upkeep. Security, safety, surveillance and mobility gadgets are being installed in the tunnel to make it safer for the road users,&rdquo; he said.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Chief Engineer Project Beacon, Brig R K Sharma briefed the Lt General with respect to the maintenance strategy being followed and required advance technology in the modernization of the tunnel.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">On the construction of Zozila tunnel, Lt General Parnaik said that the matter is with the State Government for issuing of forest and environmental clearances. &ldquo;And once the process is completed by the State Government, further action will be initiated for construction of this 14 kilometer tunnel which shall be connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the country,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;</span></span></span><span style="color:rgb(105, 105, 105); font-family:arial; font-size:11px; line-height:1.6em">He said that the road connectivity on all the snow bound areas especially Zozila will be carried out with better equipments and trained BRO personnel saying this will help to keep the road open for longer period.</span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">&ldquo;J&amp;K is having unique topography, mostly mountainous, with climate differing from other areas. During winter, the challenges posed by the snowfall on the working of the BRO personnel are different in nature.&nbsp; BRO personnel working in needs expertise to handle the situation,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;&nbsp; He expressed satisfaction over the performance of the Project Beacon in the &ldquo;critical and challenging circumstances.&rdquo;</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Source-On Request</span></span></span></p>
