Plea to Give Priority for Road Work in Budget

Alleging that development is lagging in Tripunithura and nearby areas, the residents here have demanded that priority be given for infrastructure development in the 2014-15 budget to be presented by Tripunithura Municipality in March. “The proposals to widen major junctions and stretches are collecting dust. The Municipality and the Public Works Department (PWD) have not yet taken any concrete action in this regard. Proposals to implement pending projects, thus ensuring comprehensive infrastructure development, must be included in the budget,” said Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Association (TRURA) members.

They said development of the roads is necessary to ward off the threat of tankers transporting gas and chemicals through the narrow roads in the town. “More than 100 bullet tankers carrying toxic chemicals and liquefied petroleum gas from Kochi Refinery, Indian Oil Corporation plant at Udayamperoor and FACT ply through the area every day. This poses a huge threat to the residents as the impact will be bigger if a gas tanker tragedy occurs here. Hence, alternative route creation for these tankers is important,” they added.

They also demanded that the Mamala-Chithrapuzha Bund Road and Manakkapadi-Vyttila road be widened. “Through linking these roads, the tankers will get a separate passage to reach Vyttila from Thiruvankulam. Also, the Konothupuzha bund road must be developed. This road can be used by the bullet tankers plying to Indian Oil Corporation’s plant at Udayamperoor from the Refinery,” they said. They said the budget must include reduction in building tax for the families who had set up rain water harvesting system, solar panel system and bio gas plants at their residences. Meanwhile, Tripunithura Municipal authorities said survey for widening the Mamala-Chitrapuzha Bund Road has already been begun by the municipality.

Source-On Request
