The project has been topmost on activists&#39; minds as 360 trees are likely to be axed during the work.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The groundbreaking ceremony of the work will be held near Jehan Circle.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The road is supposed to be 30 metres wide as per the last development plan. A width of only 12 metres is, however, in use at present. Villagers had initially opposed the construction of the road and tree activists took up the cry later demanding that as many trees be saved from the axe as possible while the road is being built.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Even as corporators and civic officials assured that the maximum numer of trees would be saved, a tender worth INR 44 crore for the construction of a five kilometer road was floated a couple of months ago. Tree activists are now concerned as they have not been told the exact number of trees that would be kept standing.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">&quot;The expansion of the road must take place, but they must attempt to save as many trees as possible,&quot; said tree activists.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">&quot;What is surprising is that there are other issues to be dealt with on a priority basis like encroachment on the road. Nothing, however, is being done about that. They should first remove illegal structures and then think of cutting the trees. For example, there are marriage halls in the area that do not have a parking facility,&quot; they said.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Source-On Request</span></span></span></p>
