Contractor to rake in nearly INR 14,524 crore from 5 Toll Plazas by 2027

<p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The private contractor recovering toll at the five entry points of Mumbai is estimated to collect INR 14,524 crore at the end of his contract period in 2027, against an investment of INR 2,100 crore, according to the average collections computed on a real time vehicle census by activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), during June-July 2012.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">A comprehensive chart of the average estimated collections at all key toll posts across the state was drawn up by a team of professionals hired by the MNS. These calculations were based on the actual vehicle count at the Vashi, Airoli, the Eastern Express highway (Bhandup), LBS Marg (Mulund) and the Dahisar toll plazas, recorded by MNS workers in June-July 2012.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The MNS charts showed that the average daily toll recovered at five entry points of Mumbai in 19.06.2012- 02.07.2012, was around INR 1.38 crore, with a daily average traffic of 3.60 lakh vehicles.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">&quot;The MSRDC had auctioned these five toll booths twice, once in 2002 for INR 427 core and again in 2009 for INR 2,100 crore. This adds up to INR 2,527 crore. According to our estimates, drawn up scientifically after considering the increasing vehicle population and our survey, the amount collected by the toll contractor at the end of 2013 was around INR 3,044 crore. By the time these five toll plazas are dismantled in 2027, the private contractor would have collected INR 14,524 crore,&#39;&#39; an MNS leader said. He claimed the government continues to allow the contractor to collect toll when he has already recovered his investments and made a fair profit.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Under the contract agreement, MEPL is expected to maintain 27 major flyovers, five pedestrian subways and one rail over-bridge in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mumbai during the toll collection period.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The MNS chart showed that the average daily toll collection at Khalapur post on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was INR 2.25 crore with more than 59,000 vehicles travelling up and down the eight-lane road linking the two cities. &quot;Going by our calculations, based on actual vehicle count, the contractor has till date collected INR 5,394 crore and on the date of completion of the toll period in 2019, total collections from Khalapur would touch INR 10,184 crore,&#39;&#39; the MNS leader said, adding the Expressway was built at INR 2,150 crore.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Source-On Request</span></span></span></p>
