The authorities said that they would identify more roads and secure the nod of the Corporation council during the development seminar that will be held on Monday. The maintenance work of these roads will be carried out under BMBC. Under this method, the bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete will be used for road tarring. The bitumen concreting will be laid over bitumen macadam, with which the potholes would be filled. The method will strengthen the road and help increase their durability by almost three years than that of normal tarring.

“Earlier, we were allowed to use only 20-mm fitting carpet method for road maintaining works carried out under the Plan Fund. But last year, the government took a vital policy decision that paved the way for carrying out some major road works under BMBC method. This year also we implemented some works under this method and for next year, more arterial roads will be repaired under this method,” said Kochi Corporation Town Planning Committee chairman K J Sohan.

This year, the Corporation already took steps to carry out some major road repair works under BMBC. They include P Gangadharan Road, Statue Road, Deshabhimani Road, Elamakkara Road and Thammanam Road. The work of other roads that will be completed soon under BMBC soon are Mathayi Manjooran Road and Old railway Station Road. The method is more expensive. It will cost nearly INR 1 crore for covering a two-lane stretch of 1 Km under BMBC method. But the authorities believe that if they opt for a normal patch work method, the roads will get damaged easily, the repair of which annually or biannually will cost the same.

Source-On Request
