CCEA reverses decision on Coal mining leases

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Tuesday reversed its earlier stance that allowed states to grant mining leases in blocks that were not under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision came after the Supreme Court refused to split the categorization between blocks that are under the CBI’s scanner and those that are not.

The CCEA had earlier asked states with coal resources to issue mining leases in blocks not being investigated by the CBI. “Following the court’s stance, the ministry just had to inform the CCEA about it,” a senior coal ministry official said. In another development, the CCEA deferred deciding on a proposal to give a subsidy of INR 2,000 per tonne for exportable raw sugar and is likely to take it up on Thursday, food minister K.V. Thomas said over the phone.
