Work on Bypass Canal soon

<p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">Aiming at finding a permanent solution to the notorious flash floods of Thampanoor area in the city during heavy rains, the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) is all set to commence the construction of a bypass diversion canal and installing measures to check the dumping of waste into the existing canal.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The 1.2 kilometres-long bypass diversion canal will be constructed from Thampanoor to Uppidamoodu bridge along the PWD road at a cost INR 21.72 crore that will be included&nbsp; under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The bypass canal will start from the Sreekumar cinema junction at Thampanoor and head towards Uppidamoodu junction, crossing SL Theatre. The project is expected to be a final solution to the perennial water-logging issues that have been haunting the area for years during the two seasonal monsoons. The tenders for the bypass canal work will be floated on Saturday.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">In November 2013, following the massive floods owing to the northeast monsoon, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had said that the project would be completed on a war footing and that Chief Secretary E K Bharat Bhushan would directly monitor it. The deadline for the completion of the project is May 31. The drains in the area were opened for declogging in November following heavy floods.</span></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="color:#696969"><span style="font-size:11px"><span style="font-family:arial">The project has been included in the the INR 30.72 crore Thampanoor flood mitigation measures. Along with the diversion canal, declogging and the widening of the canal from Lenin Nagar to Kannammoola will also be carried out. &lsquo;&rsquo;Surveillance cameras will be installed to monitor the dumping of solid waste into the canal near the KSRTC bus station here.
