Samajwadi Party workers disrupt Road-naming event

A function to name a road in Kareli area of the city could not materialise on Sunday as activists of Samajwadi Party and Mulayam Singh Youth Brigade protested at the venue and tore up banners of mayor Abhilasha Gupta who was expected to inaugurate the programme. Police were eventually deployed in the area to keep the situation under control.

Convenor of the programme and corporator Nizamuddin said, "A road passing through Kareli was to be christened after Atiq Allahabadi, the renowned poet from the city. In this connection, a resolution was passed in the sadan meeting of Allahabad Municipal Corporation which sought to name Solah Market road after Atiq Allahabadi. However, SP activists and supporters of a local MLA arrived at the scene and interfered in the function. They did not allow the programme to start and removed the microphones and banners at the place."

He said SP had hurt the sentiments of Urdu litterateurs as the name of Atiq Allahabadi evokes pride in denizens and his poetry brought laurels to the city. Though mayor Abhilasha Gupta was expected to inaugurate the function, she didn't show up.

On the other hand, activists of Mulayam Singh Yadav Youth Brigade claimed that the information regarding the programme to name the road was not given to the local MLA and MP. Even the officers concerned were oblivious of the programme, they said. City secretary of the brigade Shoaib Hasan maintained that the naming of this road will be done by local MLA Haji Pervez Ahmad.
