Maharashtra Energy Dept wasted INR 22,000 Cr due to inefficiencies, says AAP

The Aam Admi Party on Thursday, alleged that INR 22,000 crores have been wasted in the last three years by the Energy Department of Maharashtra Government, due to corruption and inefficiencies.

AAP's state convener, Anjali Damania in a media statement said that there should be immediate inquiry in the scam. If a series of simple measures are put in place in the State, then electricity bill of an average household consumer can decrease by at least 50 per cent.

Electricity tariffs in Mumbai are amongst the highest in the nation. The city that is the single largest contributor to country’s GDP always faces the brunt of all the hardships – highest prices, most expensive homes, most expensive electricity, the party believes that this loot must stop, Damania added.

AAP’s Convenor added that Maharashtra has seen nine price hikes in the last three years. The average cost of supply has risen by a whopping 68 per cent in the past 5 years from INR 3.7 in F2008 to INR 6.23 in F2013. High end households are paying INR 10-14 per unit unit, while industrial users are paying INR 8-10/unit in Maharashtra,

No wonder, thousands of medium and large scale industries have decided to move to other states, depriving Maharashtra of thousands of crores of revenues by way of taxes and employment opportunities to the people, she said.
